At Airway Dental & More, we believe your oral health is about much more than your teeth. Your mouth is connected to the rest of your body, and growing research continues to explore how inflammation in the mouth may relate to overall health, including cardiovascular health.

A recent study published in The Journal of the American Dental Association looked at an interesting piece of that connection: omega-3 fatty acids and inflammation.

What Did the Study Find?

Researchers studied patients with stable coronary artery disease who were already receiving statin therapy. Participants were divided into two groups, with one group receiving daily supplementation of the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA and the other receiving no supplementation.

After 30 months, researchers found that the omega-3 group had lower levels of certain markers associated with both oral and systemic inflammation.

Why is this important? Periodontal (gum) disease is an inflammatory condition, and research has shown an association between periodontal disease and cardiovascular conditions. Reducing inflammation and maintaining healthy gums may therefore be an important part of supporting overall wellness.

Omega-3s Aren’t a Replacement for Good Oral Hygiene

The researchers emphasized that omega-3 supplementation may complement mechanical oral hygiene, not replace it. Brushing thoroughly, cleaning between the teeth, receiving regular professional cleanings, and addressing signs of gum disease remain essential.

The study also found an interesting difference in inflammation between different areas of the mouth. Researchers suggested that this could potentially be related to handedness and brushing habits, another reminder that how you brush matters, too. Powered toothbrushes may help provide more consistent plaque removal throughout the mouth.

Looking Beyond the Teeth

Studies like this reinforce something we talk about often at Airway Dental & More: the mouth doesn’t function independently from the rest of the body.

Nutrition, inflammation, breathing, sleep, gum health, and overall wellness can all be pieces of a much larger picture. That’s why we take a comprehensive approach to dental care, looking beyond individual teeth and considering how oral health may relate to your overall well-being.

If it’s been a while since your last dental visit, or you’re concerned about bleeding gums, inflammation, or your periodontal health, schedule a visit with Airway Dental & More in Jacksonville. We’d love to help you keep your smile, and the person behind it healthy.
