When most people think about missing teeth or gum disease, they think about their smile. But research is showing that oral health may affect much more than appearance; it can influence overall health, including body weight.

A recent study published in the Journal of Periodontology followed more than 900 older adults over four years and found that individuals with fewer teeth and reduced chewing ability were more likely to experience weight gain. Researchers also found that poorer periodontal (gum) health was associated with a higher likelihood of gaining weight over time.

Why Would Missing Teeth Affect Weight?

The answer comes down to chewing. Healthy molars and strong gums allow us to comfortably eat nutrient-dense foods such as fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts, and lean proteins. When teeth are missing or painful to chew with, many people naturally begin choosing softer foods that are easier to eat.

Unfortunately, softer foods are often more processed and higher in sugars and refined carbohydrates. Over time, these dietary changes may contribute to unwanted weight gain.

The Importance of Your Back Teeth

The study found that the loss of functional molars, the large back teeth responsible for most of our chewing power, had one of the strongest associations with weight gain. Participants who maintained more functional chewing pairs were less likely to gain weight during the study period.

In other words, keeping your teeth healthy doesn't just help you chew, it may help support healthier food choices and better overall wellness.

Whether you're 8 or 80, preserving your teeth and gums is an investment in your long-term health. Regular hygiene visits, preventative care, and replacing missing tooth structure when appropriate can help maintain proper chewing function and support a healthy lifestyle.
